I can’t stop day dreaming about my most recent vacation to the Excellence Playa Mujeres so I figured I would write a blog post about it! First off, this was one of the best vacations I have ever been on. I have a big family, so traveling to cities is hard because A) We don’t all fit in one car B) Reservations at restaurants for 8-10 people are NOT easy and C) Planning every meal and moving a lot of people around not only requires a lot of planning, but can be stressful!
My only goal when I began brainstorming vacation spots was to go somewhere where we can relax and not have to plan our next meals/activities. I reached out to my most well traveled friends, Kevin and Lucy from TimeOffTravelers (they have an amazing travel instagram and blog!) and they immediately recommended me to their Honeymoon location, Excellence Playa Mujeres! Excellence Playa Mujeres is an all-inclusive adults [18+] only resort in Cancun, Mexico.
Below is a breakdown of our trip!
When booking on the website, the price of the room is for 2 people. For example, this 4 day trip costs $1,951 for two people total. This includes: transportation to and from the airport, all-inclusive alcoholic & non-alcoholic drinks, all food (I mean ALL food – unlimited 24-hour room service, gourmet meals at the resort restaurants, a full stocked bar and mini fridge in the room that gets restocked daily & breakfast buffets) and of course the beautiful room and amenities at the resort!
When we arrived at the Cancun airport, we grabbed our bags and made our way to the transportation area. We had to wait about 20 minutes for our complimentary shuttle to arrive, but once they did the service was amazing! Our driver loaded our bags into our van, and was super friendly!
We were greeted at the resort with glasses of cold champagne. We arrived around 10am and check in was at 3pm, so the staff took our bags and we began to explore!
Where to eat:
All of the restaurants are first come first serve, with the exception of the Hibachi restaurant requiring reservations. The service was a little slower than normal, so don’t show up to dinner super hungry! I recommend getting a snack beforehand so you can sit back, relax and enjoy the dining experience at the resort! We didn’t eat at a few restaurants because we only stayed for 4 nights, but that just gives us something to look forward to next time!
The Lobster House
Lobster House is one of the few restaurants that is open all day long for breakfast, lunch & dinner! They serve lobster tails and crab cakes at dinner which are a must! We went for lobster tails one night for an appetizer before going to our final restaurant destination for dinner. I highly recommend hitting up two restaurants for dinner so you can try all the amazing cuisines offered at the resort!
This snack bar is located right on the beach! They have a full bar, and cook up quesadillas, tacos, chicken fingers and more to snack on or have for lunch! The waiters on the beach & by the pool will serve you straight from your chair so you can order drinks, food and even shots without even getting up! The servers also always have bottles of water to hand out as well, so you can stay hydrated while in the hot sun (or if you have one too many beverages).
Sol was the hot spot for wood-fired pizza poolside! You can select your own pizza toppings, or choose from their pizza menu! The Margarita pizza (add jalapeños) was my favorite.
The french onion soup and filet mignon were a hit! They also had a huge selection of wines which paired perfectly with the filet! This was one of the fancier places we visited.
The margaritas here tasted better than the ones served at the bars around the resort! The chips and salsa trio, enchiladas and lamb shank (it was so tender it fell off the bone) were to die for. I told the waiter to surprise me because it was too hard to choose a dish!
Toscana had the BEST breakfast buffet which included made-to-order omelets, a full fruit bar with exotic fruits (like cactus), waffles, french toast and basically every other breakfast food you can imagine!
Flavor Market was my favorite restaurant! The sangria + charcuterie combo was so delicious after a long day at the beach. I also ordered the patatas bravas and they were 10/10. This restaurant is a great one to go to for some pre-dinner snacks because they serve small plates so it wasn’t too filling.
Spice offers both a Hibachi experience or a traditional restaurant experience! The Hibachi requires reservations a week in advance (even if you aren’t at the resort yet) because it fills up super fast! The regular restaurant is first come first serve like the others at the resort – and you can order from both the hibachi menu and sushi menu!
Aroma is the café on the property. They open at 7am each day and serve specialty lattes like Snickers, Nutella and more! They also offered pastries, pressed juices & gelato!
A smoothie bar (no alcohol). They serve fresh coconuts each day at 12pm while supplies last! Pro tip: after you pick up your coconut from Revive, bring it to the nearest bar to add rum!
There is nothing I love more than getting food delivered straight to my door on demand! The room service menu includes late night munchies, breakfast & even coffee! You can even schedule the room service the night before so it is delivered right when you wake up! My mind was blown when I learned unlimited room service was included in the one time fee to visit the resort!
The resort has many bars to choose from (you are never too far away from any bar), but below were the ones I frequented!
The Sports Bar had lots of TVs including one large projector so you don’t have to miss any of big games! My family & I are from Tampa, so we caught the Tampa Bay Lightning game at the Sports Bar one night and made some friends with other fans! They serve bar food & beers! I also recommend ordering a round of shots when your team scores.
We visited the Martini Bar located in the main lobby each night before dinner. The Forrero Rocher martini was a go-to for me as well as the Peanut Butter martini!
This was my first swim up bar experience and now I know why people love them! The bartenders were so fun and made delicious shots, piña coladas and other delicious beverages! One of the most popular drinks was the Spicy Mango margarita with a Tajin-coated rim.
Margarita & piña colada making classes were a popular destination under the roof at the Los Olas beach bar, and that doesn’t even include the full bar for made-to-order beverages!
Activities/things to do:
Each day the resort puts out a list of activities (posted by the pool and also on their app). We participated in a mud therapy class, paddle board yoga, beach obstacle courses, pool and beach volleyball, and karaoke! They also had shows each night at their outdoor theatre as well casino night (no real money involved)! It was a great way to get involved at the resort.
Download “TheExcellenceCollection” App before you visit. All restaurant menus, dress codes, daily/nightly activities are listed on the app! They also have a complimentary Pillow Menu that you can order from if your pillow isn’t of your liking.
Bring lots of sunscreen and aloe from home! The sunscreen at the resort is very pricey.
Wake up early to claim chairs by the pool or beach. We left a hat or sunscreen on the lounge chairs before grabbing breakfast!
Bring cash! We brought $100 in $1’s for tipping the servers, bartenders & staff.
Ask for a double shot in your mixed drinks! The staff is happy to do it, you just have to ask. My go-to was a double shot of vanilla vodka with diet coke!
Wifi/cellular – If you have an unlimited data plan, roaming in Mexico is included. Otherwise, the resort has free, open wifi everywhere – even on the beach!
Facebook Group: “We Love Excellence Playa Mujeres”. This group has over 35k members so it’s safe to say there are tons of suggestions and recommendations! Whether it’s questions about the weather, cancellation terms, preparing for the trip – this group is super helpful and will respond to questions in minutes – if not seconds!
What I packed:
- Highly recommend this Amazon Dress! It is very flowy and flattering at an amazing price.
- I bought this romper a few years ago from Red Dress Boutique but I found a very similar one for half the price on Amazon!
- I also ordered a few new bathing suits and cover ups! Summersalt is my new favorite place to buy bathing suits that have great coverage and quality! They are a little more pricey than your average bathing suit but I don’t think I’ll shop anywhere else for a suit!
- Amazon cover ups – I love this white button up cover up because it was so easy to throw on to walk to lunch!
- Amazon cloud slides to wear around the resort
- Bug spray
- Straws – the resort doesn’t use straws so we brought reusable metal straws!
- The sunscreen at the resort is pretty pricey so I recommend packing more than enough sunscreen for your trip. I bought a few of these Hawaiian Tropic 2-packs on Amazon!
- Supergoop Part Powder with SPF – this is basically dry shampoo with SPF and I swear by it! I am not a hat person so I use this to protect my scalp in the sun.
- Supergoop CC cream : I wore this to dinner each night to still have some SPF protection but fuller coverage foundation!
- The trending Cicapair™ Tiger Grass Color Correcting Treatment SPF 30 from Sephora is perfect for no make up days! It color corrects and makes your skin look so flawless AND it has SPF in it. I put this on my face before hitting the beach or pool each day!
When the dreaded time came to finally leave the resort, we were given a phone call the night before to schedule complimentary bag pick up so we didn’t have to haul our luggage to the lobby. We arrived in the lobby where our complimentary transportation was waiting for us. The driver loaded our luggage into the van, and drove us to the airport. When we arrived at the airport, the driver even unloaded our bags and brought them with us inside the airport! The whole experience was seamless.
I highly recommend the Excellence Playa Mujeres. It’s a great spot for a family or friends vacation, but we also saw a ton of honeymooners and couples! It’s also a great spot for those who don’t travel out of the country very often or don’t have a lot of experience traveling because of the close proximity to the U.S. and all needs are taken care of by the resort! We didn’t leave the resort once, but some people we talked to did. We found there was a lot to do at the resort and took advantage of the activities!
